"Comprehensive, Safe, and Painless Diagnostic Precision"

MRI of the spine is an advanced and safe diagnostic technique that does not involve X-rays. Instead, it employs strong magnetic fields, radiofrequency waves, and computer technology to create highly detailed images of the body's internal structures. It is ideal for assessing the condition of the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal nerves, and surrounding soft tissues and can detect early-stage abnormalities. This property enables more precise treatment plans and close monitoring of postoperative treatment outcomes.

Key Advantages of MRI of the Spine

  • Safe and painless. Because MRI does not involve the use of X-rays, it is a safer alternative to CT scans or conventional X-rays.
  • High-resolution imaging allows clear visualization of soft tissues, spinal nerves, and spinal abnormalities.
  • Superior visualization to detect hidden abnormalities obscured by bone structures, unlike X-rays. Ability to detect even subtle pathological changes.
  • Safer contrast agents with lower allergic reaction risks than those typically used in CT scans and X-rays.
  • Effective for evaluating trauma and diagnosing acute spinal cord compression and ligament injuries.
  • Precise postoperative monitoring, including scar tissue formation, infections, or recurrent disc herniation.

Conditions that MRI of the Spine Can Detect

  • Herniated disc and nerve compression
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Tumors affecting the spine or spinal nerve
  • Compression fracture of the vertebrae
  • Arthritis or loss of bone mass
  • Spinal cord ischemia
  • Infections of the vertebrae or spinal cord
  • Nerve damage from trauma or diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
  • Congenital abnormalities of the spine

Procedure

During the examination, the patient lies on a table that slides into the MRI scanner, shaped like a tunnel. The procedure takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes, and the patient must remain still throughout to obtain sharp, high-quality images. The doctor may administer an intravenous contrast agent to improve the image clarity. The MRI machine produces rhythmic loud noises during the scan; the hospital provides noise-reducing equipment, such as earplugs, to help minimize discomfort and noise during the procedure.

Precautions and Restrictions

  • Individuals with implanted metal objects, such as pacemakers, brain aneurysm clips, or bone fixation hardware, should inform their physician before the examination.
  • Individuals with claustrophobia should consult their doctors to discuss the possibility of receiving anxiety-reducing medication before the procedure.
  • Pregnant women should notify their physician in advance to ensure the highest level of safety.
