Vaccination Program for Expectant Mothers
Passing on love and protection for a healthy start begins in the womb
Why are vaccinations essential during pregnancy?
During pregnancy, keeping your baby safe is just as vital as looking after your own health. Prenatal vaccination is a powerful way to express your love and care. It creates a protective shield for your little one right in the womb, ensuring they are born with a protective immune system, the very moment they enter the world.
Recommended Vaccines During Pregnancy
- Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis): These are highly contagious infectious diseases, particularly pertussis (whooping cough), which can cause severe respiratory complications and may be life-threatening in young children. When administered between 27 and 36 weeks of pregnancy, adequate passage of maternal antibodies to the fetus occurs.
- Influenza (Flu) Vaccine: Generally, adults should receive a flu vaccination annually because the influenza virus mutates constantly. For expectant mothers, this disease carries a higher risk, which requires special attention, as it can lead to severe complications during pregnancy, such as pneumonia or pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane encasing the heart). Therefore, every pregnant woman should receive at least one dose of the influenza vaccine.
- Maternal RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) Vaccine: RSV is a leading cause of respiratory infections in infants and young children, often leading to serious conditions such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis. By getting the RSV vaccine during pregnancy, mothers can develop and pass on vital antibodies to their babies, thereby protecting them from this infection. The antibodies provide a shield of protection against severe RSV-related illnesses from birth through the first six months of life.
