Nirsevimab Immunization Package – Protection Against RSV in Infants and Young Children

  • Single-dose injection for newborns to 12 months of age
  • Two-dose regimen for children aged 12 to 24 months (for children with risk factors)

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a common respiratory virus in young children. It typically causes flu-like symptoms. However, in infants and children with underlying medical conditions, it can lead to severe infections such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis, often requiring hospitalization. In Thailand, RSV outbreaks are most prevalent during the rainy and winter seasons. Preventive measures include frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with infected individuals, and immunization with Nirsevimab, which helps prevent severe RSV-related illness.

  • Reduces the risk of RSV infection by up to 79.5%
  • Lowers the severity and likelihood of ICU admission by 75.3%
  • Minimize the risk of hospitalization from lower respiratory tract infections caused by RSV by up to 83.2%
  • RSV monoclonal antibody (Nirsevimab) is protective up to 5 months, covering the peak of the RSV season

Immunization Guideline

Nirsevimab is recommended for all infants born during the RSV season or entering their first RSV season. It is also advisable for some high-risk children aged 8 to 19 months who are entering their second RSV season.

Timing Recommendation

Administration is advised between October and March, during which RSV outbreaks commonly occur in many regions. Infants born during this time should ideally be given the dose within the first week of life, preferably before hospital discharge.
