PESA / TESE

Men with ejaculation problems, a history of mumps, vas deferens occlusion, or congenital absence of vas deferens are likely to have no sperm in the semen.  However, today’s sperm retrievals technology, such as PESA or TESE, can circumvent infertility problems.

Sperm retrieval methods

  • PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) uses a small needle to harvest sperm from the epididymis.
  • TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) takes tiny slivers of tissues from the testis to extract sperm under a microscope.

These sperm harvesting procedures are suitable for men who have the following conditions:

  • Congenital absence of the vas deferens
  • Low sperm production due to genetics or a history of mumps with testicular inflammation.
  • Irreversible genital tract occlusion due to trauma, surgery, or infection.
  • Vasectomy or failed vasectomy reversal

After viable sperm extraction, egg fertilization can occur via the ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) technique.
