This test utilizes computed tomography (CT) to detect calcium deposits in the wall of coronary arteries. On the scan, the calcium deposit locations appear as bright white spots within the walls of the arteries. Specialized software analyzes the brightness and area of the calcium deposits to calculate a composite score that portends the probability of a future heart attack.

Why is this test important?
Calcium deposits in the coronary arteries are a key indicator of plaque buildup and arterial narrowing. The higher the calcium score, the greater the risk of a future heart attack.

Family history of heart disease
Hyperlipidemia

If there is a family history of familial hypercholesterolemia, a coronary artery calcium scan is advisable before the age of 40.
