As medical science advances, there is growing public interest in DNA analysis, genetic testing, and the screening of oncogenes. These burgeoning genetic technologies are playing an increasingly pivotal role in the diagnosis of human illnesses.

MedPark Hospital, renowned for its expertise in treating complex diseases, recognizes the pivotal role genetics plays in improving patient outcomes. In line with this vision, we have established the Genomics Laboratory, powered by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals. This dream team works collaboratively to deliver precision and effective care. In this article, we invite you to meet some of the dedicated front-line and behind-the-scenes staff in our Genomics Lab.

Genetic Testing: A Field Where Teamwork Is Essential

The first expert we had the honor of speaking with was Dr. Nok – Asst. Prof. Dr. Tanawan Samleerat Carraway, Genomics Laboratory Manager. She shared:

“Our laboratory is designed as a fully integrated center for precision medicine. We manage every step of the process—from collecting biological samples, whether they be cells, blood, or other cell-free genetic materials, to conducting in-depth DNA sequence analysis and delivering comprehensive results to medical specialists. A team of seasoned professionals with expertise in clinical genetics and advanced biotechnology oversees each stage.”

The state-of-the-art genetic sequencing technology, known as Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), runs under rigorous sample quality control and offers exceptional accuracy. Our bioinformaticians use specialized software to analyze complex genomic data. Our clinical geneticist team parses the results into clear, interpreted information for attending doctors and patients. In essence, a team of dedicated specialists navigates complex processes and data to ensure that the information delivered is thorough, clearly understood, and seamlessly translated into effective clinical action.

“Our team brings together clinical geneticists, medical technologists, certified genetic nurse counselors, pharmacists, and specialists across multiple disciplines. Each plays a pivotal role in providing holistic patient care.”

Medical Genetics: Understanding Genes, Understanding the Body

With the rapid advancement of medical genetics, it has gained a prominent role within the healthcare landscape, worthy of attention. Dr. Prasit Powthongkum, a specialist in Medical Genetics, explains:

“Patients suffering from rare health conditions with underlying genetic factors—commonly referred to as genetic disorders—constitute a relatively small minority compared to common diseases. Consequently, general practitioners may not be familiar with these conditions, making diagnosis challenging. This case is where medical geneticists play a crucial role.”

One of the key areas where Dr. Prasit believes medical genetics has made significant contributions is in the care of cancer patients. Today, we can genetically assess the risk of the same cancers developing in family members for many types of cancer. This gene testing enables patients to proactively engage in a risk mitigation strategy alongside their doctor’s vigilant surveillance. For example, in breast cancer, individuals with a genetic predisposition may opt for prophylactic mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery to reduce the likelihood of developing cancer in the future. This approach not only helps prevent disease onset but also substantially lowers the potentially enormous costs associated with cancer treatment down the line.

“Another prevalent clinical category includes coronary artery disease and ischemic cardiomyopathy, in which some patients exhibit a clear genetic predisposition, such as familial hypercholesterolemia.”

“Individuals with a family history of premature cardiovascular disease who present with elevated blood cholesterol levels may benefit from genetic assessment to evaluate their risk. The genetic test enables doctors to design personalized treatment strategies to effectively manage lipid levels and reduce the likelihood of developing cardiovascular complications.”

The doctor highlighted a current trend and growing interest in preventive healthcare, which is the ability to predict an individual’s risk of developing certain genetically based diseases in the future. This predictive insight enables proper management strategies. This concept aligns with disease prediction through knowledge of medical genetics.

Clinical Advantages of a Dedicated In-House Genomics Laboratory at MedPark

“The first and foremost advantage is the speed of diagnosis. Delays in testing lead to delays in diagnosis, and for certain conditions, time is of the essence. With an in-house laboratory and a team of dedicated specialists ready to support rapid testing, we can immediately commence and run genetic tests. Results are obtained quickly, ultimately benefiting the patient.”

Another important highlight is fetal genetic screening during pregnancy. Expectant mothers often need timely results to make informed decisions about family planning. Today, advanced testing can be performed early in pregnancy, well before the stage when doctors typically perform amniocentesis. The NIPT enables earlier detection of potential chromosome number abnormalities, allowing couples to make informed decisions about whether to continue the pregnancy.

In addition, modern medicine is opening doors to the possibility of treating certain conditions in the fetus in utero. Early detection of genetic abnormalities is therefore essential, as it expands treatment options and enhances the future quality of life for both mother and child.

The Genomics Laboratory at MedPark offers Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), a chromosomal screening test for the fetus that does not involve amniocentesis. Using a simple blood draw sample from the mother, this test can accurately and safely assess the risk of chromosomal number abnormalities, such as Down syndrome, as well as some microdeletion syndromes. This service has been well-received by doctors and patients, thanks to its key strengths: speed, accuracy, international quality standards, and seamless integration with comprehensive prenatal care. It enables doctors to make timely decisions, reduces the need for invasive diagnostic procedures, eases the emotional burden on families, and enhances the quality of prenatal care from the earliest stages of pregnancy.

Genetic Testing Isn’t Always Expensive

A common misconception is that genetic testing always comes with a high price tag. However, many types of genetic tests today are far more affordable. Some tests can even help reduce overall medical expenses by eliminating the need for unnecessary procedures. Dr. Prasit explains:

“Modern technology has become significantly more affordable compared to just a few years ago. In some cases, genetic testing can provide a definitive diagnosis of the underlying cause, eliminating the need for other redundant examinations and lowering potential costs. When applied judiciously, genetic testing is a highly cost-effective strategy.”

A concern many patients have is that genetic testing might complicate insurance claims.  At MedPark’s Genomics Laboratory, dedicated staff are available to provide guidance and evaluate the feasibility of testing and treatment options, ensuring the most appropriate and satisfactory approach for each patient.

We have now explored an overview of the operations and key strengths of the Genomics Laboratory at MedPark Hospital. In the next issue, we will introduce you to two other professional roles that help integrate medical genetics seamlessly into patient diagnosis and care. Stay tuned!
