Shingrix®, a recombinant subunit zoster vaccine (RZV), is a novel, non-live vaccine that prevents herpes zoster (shingles) based on a specific protein of the varicella-zoster virus called glycoprotein E.

Shingrix® is highly effective, demonstrating 97% efficacy against herpes zoster in older adults aged 50 years and above. It is also effective against postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a painful complication of shingles, with an efficacy of 91.2%. Ten years after Shingrix vaccination, the efficacy for the prevention of herpes zoster is still high, at 89%.

Shingrix® is a safe and effective vaccine that can help protect older adults from herpes zoster and its complications.

Individuals suitable for Shingrix® vaccination

•    Individuals aged 50 and above. Shingrix® is administered intramuscularly, with the second dose given 2-6 months after the first dose.
•    Individuals aged over 18 who are at higher risk of herpes zoster than other people, including immunocompromised individuals and those taking steroids, undergoing radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, two doses are administered 1-2 months apart.
•    Individuals who have received zoster vaccine live (ZVL), give Shingrix® at least 2 months after receiving ZVL.
•    Individuals who have had a previous episode of herpes zoster, give Shingrix® at least 6 months after.
