Stress Echocardiogram
Have you ever experienced chest tightness or pain, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or an irregular heartbeat while climbing stairs, doing light exercise, or heavier-than-usual exertion—and had to stop and rest?
Many people assume these symptoms are due simply to age or inadequate rest. However, they may actually be warning signs of coronary artery disease or acute myocardial infarction, conditions that become more noticeable when physical workload increases.
What Is a Stress Echo? How Does It Provide Accurate Results?
A stress echocardiogram (stress echo) is a diagnostic test that evaluates heart muscle and valve function using ultrasound while the heart is under stress, typically during treadmill exercise. It helps determine whether the heart muscle is receiving an adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood and whether there are signs of myocardial ischemia, chest pain, or abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
One of the key advantages of stress echo is that it allows physicians to assess heart muscle contraction, heart valve function, and changes in the size and movement of the heart chambers, providing greater diagnostic accuracy than a standard exercise treadmill test (EST).
Who Should Consider a Stress Echocardiogram?
- Individuals who experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue with physical activity
- Individuals with risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease
- Individuals who want to assess their physical readiness before beginning strenuous exercise or those who want to maintain their fitness and health.
- Individuals who require a more comprehensive evaluation of their heart health, as recommended by their physician
