Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sathaporn Manatsathit: A Highly Experienced IBD Specialist in Thailand
Abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation may seem like mundane occurrences that everyone experiences in daily life. However, beneath these ordinary symptoms, serious chronic conditions may be lurking undetected for months or even years. The persons capable of deciphering and precisely treating these abnormalities are specialists in gastroenterology and hepatology.
For those seeking an accomplished expert in gastrointestinal and liver diseases to navigate complex and challenging diagnoses, we invite you to meet Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sathaporn Manatsathit, Head of the Gastrointestinal and Liver Center at MedPark Hospital, has gained recognition as “the Godfather of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Thailand.”

30 Years on: From Tropical Medicine to President of the Gastroenterological Association
“At the time, Thailand faced a nationwide shortage of gastroenterology and hepatology specialists. After completing my studies and obtaining my MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians) in the United Kingdom, I returned to Thailand and worked for three years. During that period, I had the opportunity to train in gastroenterology. The timing was ideal, and I ultimately chose a path to be a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sathaporn’s journey at the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital began as a medical student, where he later pursued specialization in Tropical Medicine. He subsequently continued his training in the United Kingdom and earned the prestigious MRCP (Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians). Upon returning to Thailand, he became a key figure in establishing and advancing the field of gastroenterology in the country. With over three decades of experience, he has held numerous prestigious leadership roles, including Head of the Division of Gastroenterology at Siriraj Hospital, President of the Gastroenterological Association of Thailand, and Deputy Director of Siriraj Hospital. These accomplishments stand as a testament to his expertise in managing complex cases referred from across the nation.

Caring for IBD with the “Godfather of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Thailand.”
IBD is a complex condition that is often hard to diagnose and requires continuous, long-term care. At a time when this disease was still largely unrecognized in Thailand, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sathaporn was the first doctor to trailblaze the diagnosis and treatment.
“In the past, when Thai patients presented with diarrhea, it was most often attributed to parasitic or infectious diseases. Chronic diarrhea, however, was not widely regarded as a disease in its own right in Thailand, despite its being in existence for centuries. It simply was under the radar in our country then. After I returned from the United Kingdom, I became one of the first doctors in Thailand to care for patients with this disease, and at that time, I had accumulated the largest number of such cases in the country. Although IBD does have a genetic predisposition, environmental factors also play a significant role. The consumption of processed foods, living conditions, and changing lifestyles have all contributed to the increasing number of cases. In Western countries, there are millions of patients with this condition.”
The symptoms of this condition are a far cry from typical diarrhea, resolving on its own within one to two weeks. Instead, patients often endure persistent symptoms for months or even years. In the first year of practice, I diagnosed only a few cases. However, the number steadily increased to dozens and eventually hundreds. Dr. Sathaporn's extensive IBD caseload made him the most experienced clinician in Thailand, earning him the moniker "Godfather of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Thailand.

Gut Microbiome: A New Frontier Beyond Gastrointestinal Health
When discussing emerging trends in gastrointestinal care, besides advancement in endoscopic techniques, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sathaporn highlights the growing understanding of the gut microbiome balance, which plays a crucial role in overall health. Research activities are increasing, looking into their associations with cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, and dementia.
“Today, our understanding of the gut microbiome has advanced tremendously. Importantly, it is no longer the exclusive purview of gastroenterology. Doctors across many specialties are increasingly interested in this area because it influences multiple systems in the human body. We now know that a well-balanced gut microbiome is associated with longevity, a lower risk of liver and kidney diseases, reduced cancer risk, and a decreased likelihood of cognitive decline. Because nearly every aspect of our health interconnects with the gut microbiome. Hence, there is still vast room for exploration in this field as millions of microbial species within the gut microbiome are yet to be studied.”
Although the probiotic supplement industry has expanded dramatically in recent years, medical science is advancing toward more sophisticated therapeutic frontiers. One such innovation is fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), which involves transferring stool or beneficial gut microorganisms from a healthy donor to another patient to restore microbial balance. FMT represents a new frontier of medicine with vast potential for further research and development.

Tackling Challenges in the Treatment of Complex Gastrointestinal Diseases
