Breast Clinic

Breasts are structurally complex, specialized organs of the female reproductive system, equally essential as others. Their primary function is to produce milk for breastfeeding. The mammary glands consist of a branching network of alveoli and ducts aggregating into lobules and sections called lobes. Each breast consists of 15-20 lobes, arranged like petals of a flower around the nipple, with the lactiferous duct of each lobe ending at the nipple.  Adipose and fibrous tissues fill the space between the ducts and the lobules. Pectoral muscles lie beneath the breasts, and a loose connective tissue layer joins the breast to the muscle fascia, providing mobility and support.

Breast disorders are on the rise, with breast cancer now being the top cause of death in women with cancer. According to the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health of Thailand, the number of new breast cancer cases in Thai women rose to 38,559 in 2022, with the highest prevalence among women aged 60 years and older. In 2023, there was an increase of 18,000 new breast cancer cases, while the number of breast cancer-related deaths in Thailand stood at approximately 4,800, averaging 13 fatalities per day.

Regular breast self-exams beginning at 20 years old and annual breast cancer screening from age 35 can aid in the early detection of breast cancer and improve treatment results. Research indicates timely treatment upon finding a tumor under 2 centimeters ensures a survival rate of around 95-99 percent.

  • The clinic offers personalized preventive measures and treatments for breast cancer to help patients lead a high quality of life with their families for an extended period. These interventions include prophylactic mastectomy in patients with a high risk of developing breast cancer, accurate biopsy for a treatment plan suitable for the stage and symptoms of breast diseases, a surgical procedure performed using efficacious technology, personalized chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiotherapy.

Diseases and disorders

Tests and procedures

  • Digital mammograms and breast ultrasounds are advisable for women aged 35 and older, especially those with risk factors like a prior breast tumor, family history of cancer, first pregnancy after 30, nulliparity, long-term use of estrogen or birth control pills, and past chest radiotherapy for other conditions.
  • Consultation and tests for breast lumps and altered shape and size of breasts
  • Consultation on breast skin abnormalities, such as rashes, wounds, peau d'orange, skin tags, breast asymmetry, swelling, redness, and pain
  • Consultation on nipple discharge, such as clear fluid, blood, lymph, or lymph mixed with blood

Specialties

  • Breast surgery encompasses surgical procedures for noncancerous breast disorders, such as excisional breast biopsy and minimally invasive breast surgery, and surgical procedures for breast cancer, such as breast-conserving surgery, endoscopic breast surgery, breast reconstruction, sentinel lymph node biopsy, partial lymph node biopsy, and total mastectomy. These procedures facilitate a happy and high-quality life for patients.
  • Breast plastic and reconstructive surgery refers to endoscopic-assisted breast procedures that reconstruct the breasts for post-mastectomy cancer patients through small incisions. A surgeon builds a new breast for a patient configured to resemble the removed breast.

Reconstructive breast surgery is achievable with different techniques, including immediate or delayed post-mastectomy reconstruction years after initial breast cancer treatment. The surgical approach is tailored to each patient by the surgeon.
