  • A doctor passionate about the performing arts

Dr. Peach - Dr. Suppakamol Chatsupakul - related her feelings about being a “dermatologist” through a small voice and bright smile that she was born in a family of doctors and was familiar with this profession for as long as she can remember. When she was young, her mother instilled in her that she must do well in school to choose any career path she desired.

She is passionate about performing arts, dance, and theatrical performance. The Faculty of Communication Arts should be one of what she has been in her thoughts. But when choosing her career, she decided instead to study at the Faculty of Medicine because she could help many people by being a doctor.

“I like working in the Emergency Department because I can save the injured. I like performing medical treatments. Once, there was a mass casualty from an explosion at a factory, and around 30 injured persons arrived at about the same time. I fought so hard because I wanted everyone to survive. Another case is childbirth in a taxi in front of the hospital. The traffic was very congested, and I did not want to wait and decided to run with the nurses to cut the umbilical cord in the taxi. I felt so proud that I could help them in time.”

  • Acne scars are not small problems.

Now Dr. Suppakamol is a dermatologist specializing in laser therapy and minor surgery at the Dermatology and Aesthetic Clinic, Hair Center of MedPark Hospital. She provides consultation for skin problems, such as redness, blemish, acne indentation, and facial scars, particularly surgery for acne indentation scars that sink into the skin. The cause is a delayed treatment of inflamed acne or an incorrect treatment so the skin cannot heal properly.

Dr. Suppakamol commented that if you have never had acne scars, you may view it as a small problem. But having given consultations to many patients, she understands that facial scars can affect life, work, and social interaction. Most patients have tried many remedies told by their acquaintances or on the internet before seeing a doctor. However, the outcome is not great, losing more of their confidence.

“Skin diseases can cause social stigma. They impact patients confidence to step into society. Today you are beautiful, but the next day, you have hair loss or psoriasis, restricting your way of living. Most patients came to seek treatments with more advanced techniques than they had earlier. Some cases are, I admit, hard, but we have specialist doctors in various fields who are ready to provide care."

  • Modern doctors must keep up with the latest technologies.

When asked about the crucial doctor qualities in the digital era, Dr. Suppakamol expressed her viewpoint that doctors must have a keen eye for innovation. During the past ten years, though the nature and classification of skin diseases have not changed, still grouping into infectious diseases, genetic diseases, and cancer, more and more medications and skin treatment modalities are available that help patients to have the same quality of life as others. Modern doctors must keep up with the trend and know what medications or treatments can treat the disease more effectively. The medical devices and equipment at MedPark Hospital are not run-of-the-mill devices, but they are A+ grade which every doctor must learn to use appropriately.

“Laser equipment considered to be the best, which I excel is Pico Laser which can stimulate collagen production under the acne scars without causing additional external facial scars. The procedure is quick and less painful. It differs from the older laser equipment, which can leave a scab mark. In addition to state-of-the-art equipment, a good team is necessary. Patient care needs teamwork. No matter how complex and hard the case is, I am confident because we have a multidisciplinary team whom I can consult.”

Dr. Suppakamol mentioned the complex case of an overseas patient who presented with a big acne scar sized nearly 1 cm at MedPark Hospital. After over ten laser treatment sessions, the outcome was still not satisfactory. Dr. Suppakamol surgically converted the circular-shaped acne scar to a straight line and performed Pico laser treatment. After 2-3 months of treatment, it became shallower; the patient gained more confidence.

Besides treating patients and helping them to regain confidence and resume their regular daily activities, her happiness is playing outdoor sports without worrying about sun damage. Her favorite activity is playing golf; her ultimate dream is to turn pro. She also enjoys traveling and eating. She would like to remind everyone to “take care of yourself. If you have skin problems, you should immediately seek treatment. If left untreated, the condition can be more difficult to cure. The older you get, the less successful the treatment becomes.”
